Q. Do I have to be holy to be a Sister?

A. Religious life is the striving for holiness. None of us has arrived, yet. It is a life-long process.

Q. Will I be able to keep in touch with my family and friends?

A. It is important that these relationships grow even more. I am closer to my family than I could have imagined.

Q. How did you know you wanted to be a nun?

A. I had a strong desire to do more with my life. It was like a whisper that shouted.

Q. Do you miss getting married and not having a family?

A. No. the love I could have given to my husband and family has been redirected to those to whom I minister.

Q. What do you Sisters do all day?

A. There is not enough time in the day – A balance of prayer, ministry, relaxation-spending time with each other. Each day brings its own challenge.

Q. Do you have to wear a habit all the time?

A. When in ministry, yes. In leisure, no.

Q. Do you have to pray all the time?

A. There are times set aside for prayer (Matins, Divine Liturgy, Vespers, personal
prayer) – quiet time with the Lord. All of life becomes prayer.

Q. Are you happy as a Sister?

A. Yes. Being a Sister has brought out the best in me. I have become more, done more, and have met so many wonderful people. It's been great!

Q. Don’t you think you can do more in the world?

A. I am in the world and I am doing good. "Good" happens by single, married and religious.

Q. Do you find it hard to pray?

A. Sometimes. But doesn’t everyone?

Q. With so many careers open to women, why would anyone go to the convent?

A. Why wouldn’t one? You can have a closer relationship with Jesus Christ and be a psychologist, teacher, social worker, etc. etc.

 

 
 
What is the process for joining the Sisters of St. Basil?
There are five levels for Community Membership:

1. Candidacy (six months to one year) - This is a period of time to become better acquainted with the Sister through monthly visits. The candidate lives at home.

2. Postulancy (one year) - This is a period of time to allow the person to make a gradual transition from her former mode of life to life in the community.

3. Novitiate (two years) - The Canonical Year is a time for the novice to deepen her union with Jesus Christ, knowing him to be the center of her life. The Apostolic Year is a time to prepare for ministry which is an overflow of a deep relationship with Christ.

4. Temporary Profession (five years) - A temporary commitment of vows for a five year period. She receives the veil as a sign of her temporary commitment.

5. Perpetual Membership – Permanent incorporation into the Order. She receives a ring and cross as a sign of perpetual membership.
