Pilgrimage 2009

Under a bright moon the hierarchy, clergy, sisters, youth and faithful processed to the Shrine of Our Lady of Pochaiv on Saturday night, October 3, 2009. There the Akathist to the Motherof God was celebrated by Archbishop Stefan Soroka with responses by the Philadelphia Deanery Clergy. The service concluded with an inspiring and heartfelt homily delivered by Very Reverend Ivan Kaszczak.

Afterwards the sixty-some youths met in the Basilian Spirituality Center for the Young Adult Dialogue. Under the direction of Very Rev. Ivan Kaszczak, Rev. Myron Myronyuk, Sister Dia Stasiuk, OSBM and Sister Maria Rozmarynowycz, OSBM the youth shared in a program consisting of prayer, presentations, reflection and dialogue.

On Sunday, October 4, 2009, over a thousand pilgrims descended upon the motherhouse grounds, as the day commenced with the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. The Celebrant and Homilist was Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka. Concelebrants were Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, Bisho Basil Losten, Very Rev. Philip Sandrick, OSBM, and Rev. Archpriest Daniel Troyan. Paul J. Makar and Claudio Marconi served as Deacons. The responses were sung by the Seminarians of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington, DC.

Under a bright sunny sky the pilgrims gathered at the Shrine of Our Lady of Pochaiv where a Moleben to the Mother of God was celebrated by Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM along with Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka and clergy from the Philadelphia Archeparchy. The choir from St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Elizabeth, NJ under the direction of Rev. Joseph Szupa sang the responses. The services concluded with the Mystery of Holy Anointing with the pilgrims coming forward in faith and hope to receive a healing touch.

The theme “Mother of God, Omophor of Life” was stressed throughout both days in the homilies, programs and events of the day. This was especially evident in the children’s program conducted by Sister Lydia Anna Sawka on Sunday afternoon. Sister gave a brief introduction on the significance of the feast of Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrov) with the children engaging in coloring their own icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
