BASILIAN LEGACY INSTITUTE
The Basilian Legacy Institute of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great is a newly established initiative. In 2003 the provincial administration began an assessment to determine the future of the Jesus, Lover of Humanity Province and the mission of the sisters. Along with consultants and experts we the strengths and challenges were evaluated in terms of current membership and projections, property issues, and the viability of the sponsored institutions of the Province along with the mission and ministry. Some of the questions asked were:
How can the Province insure that it lives out its central mission at that time? What is the legacy of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great, Jesus, Lover of Humanity Province? And most importantly – What is the Spirit calling us to as we face the future?
to be focused on the Gospel to move forward with compassion and grace. In this spirit the goals set were:
to foster the vocation of the laity in Province institutions to prepare and empower lay leadership to develop a systematic way to invite and incorporate a Basilian charism (spirit) in the laity. The Basilian Legacy Institute, a new office, is entrusted with the task of providing a systematic way to invite and incorporate the Basilian charism and to carry out the goals to which the sisters are committed. It is the purpose of this office to find ways enable others to create a future based on the legacy of the past. The Institute will be the catalyst in terms of getting the Basilian legacy known to laity in leadership positions, as well as a source of collaboration in Basilian Eastern Spirituality for other provinces. It shall serve as the center from which is proclaimed the legacy of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great, especially in the Basilian and Eastern tradition. A three year program includes the following: - to have the Sisters tell their story (oral and written) to coincide with the Province centennial celebration in 2010-2011 - to gather and disseminate materials on St. Basil and the Eastern Tradition in collaboration with Manor College, St. Basil Academy and the Pastoral Ministry team in Ambridge, PA. - to post materials from the Basilian Legacy Institute presentations on the Province website. - to establish a Basilian Legacy Museum - to initiate a Basilian Youth Outreach (OSBM – Outreach – Service – Basilian – Ministry - to recognize prominent laity living out the Sister’s mission (Partners at the table). - to develop and present programs for the staff at Manor College to include topics on
St. Basil’s work ethic The program was officially launched in April and August at St. Basil Academy and Manor College with a presentation to the faculty and staff by Msgr. George Appleyard.
