Two Sisters Celebrate Jubilees On Saturday, June 28th, two Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great celebrated their Golden Jubilees, marking 50 years since they first entered the convent in Fox Chase Manor, PA. For each Sister, the journey has taken them places they never quite imagined. Sister Genevieve Kotyk, OSBM and Sister Joann Sosler, OSBM both entered the order in 1958, but from very different backgrounds. Sister Genevieve is a European orphan of World War II, who lived for a time in the Sisters’ orphanage, Sister Joann born in the U.S. in Hamtramack, MI. Once in the monastery, both went on to become teachers, Sr. Genevieve focusing on elementary education, serving in Jersey City, NJ, Auburn, NY, and Philadelphia, PA. Sister Genevieve would also spend her summers on the Sisters’ property in Chesapeake City, MD. Then she spent 15 years in full time care and maintenance of this property. Sister Joan’s teaching career spanned a great number of schools; Newark, NJ, New York City, NY, Philadelphia and Chester, PA. While teaching she handled everything from elementary teacher to high school principal. Sister Joann ended her teaching career in 1986 after a successful year as principal of Saint Basil Academy, an acclaimed prestigious school for young women run by the Sisters, to become the treasurer for the Province, a position she holds today. Sister Joann also gives of her time at Jeanes Hospital as a volunteer chaplain. The Jubilee celebration brought loved ones from across the country. In a ceremony sculpted by tradition, yet relevant to today, Sister Genevieve and Sister Joann rededicated themselves to the Order of Saint Basil and to God. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Bishop John Bura, Bishop Basil Losten, Rev. George Worschak, Rev. Edward Higgins, and Rev Joe Penkowski. After the Divine Liturgy, the Jubilarians, Sisters, clergy, and guests traveled to the Sisters’ dining room to continue the day of sharing, remembrance, and joy. A dinner had been specially prepared for the guests of honor, who spent the remainder of the afternoon sharing good food with great friends and family.
